Duties
The successful candidate will have responsibility for the supervision of the analytical chemistry teaching laboratories for Chemistry 211/213,
311/313 and 305 and day-to-day management of these facilities.

Schedules and coordinates laboratory experiments, including preparation of unknowns

Maintains the instrumentation, computers, accessories, and supplies

Trains, supervises and evaluates the Teaching Assistants

Revises and updates the Laboratory and Teaching Assistants' manuals

In consultation with the analytical faculty, works to improve experiments and to develop, test, and implement new experiments, and prepare materials for lecture demonstrations

Writes proposals for new instrumentation and laboratory instructional programs

Qualifications

M Sc in Analytical Chemistry, or equivalent experience, with significant teaching experience. Excellent management and organizational skills; strong computer skills. Several years experience with a broad background of related laboratory experience in analytical volumetric and instrumental techniques.

NAIT's Chemical Technology Program has openings for two full-time instructors - one salaried and one sessional. The sessional opportunity is available until May 5, 2006. Course assignments will involve instruction in introductory chemistry and delivery of chemistry to various technology programs at NAIT. Course delivery may require knowledge of some instrumental analysis techniques.

Responsibilities:

Prepare and deliver lessons, assignments, lectures and lab demonstrations

Continuously update course curriculum to ensure relevance to industry needs

Participate in activities to enhance professional skills and qualifications as required by program curriculum

Evaluate student progress through assignments, exams and lab competencies

Promote a professional work environment for students

Contribute in a positive way to maintain "student success"
Qualifications:


Related BSc degree or equivalent in chemistry or related field

Extensive relevant and practical experience

A diploma in chemical technology and practical experience in oil chemistry would be considered assets

Teaching and/or leadership experience would be valued as a definite asset

Remuneration: Will be commensurate with education and experience

Description

Dow Fort Saskatchewan is a diverse Chemical/ petrochemical production facility which includes several fully modern world scale plants, plus our own power plant. Our main products include: chlorine, caustic soda, ethylene glycol, vinyl chloride monomer, hydrocarbon products, Styrofoam brand insulation, and linear low density polyethylene.


We are looking for a Chemical Technologist to join our Gas Chromatography team at Dow's Analytical Sciences Laboratory in Fort Saskatchewan.


The team provides both routine (sample analysis) and non-routine (method development, problem solving, technology development) support for many of Dow's businesses located locally and globally. A significant amount of technology development is also carried out by understanding and applying new technology to meet the needs of our businesses.
Participation in global teams and working with external partners is an important part of the job.

Candidate must be able to work independently to manage projects and be able to set and meet deadlines to meet business needs. At the same time, the candidate will need to work as an effective member of a well integrated team, working closely with other team members to deliver analytical solutions.

Relevant laboratory experience using, maintaining and trouble shooting Gas Chromatography equipment would be an asset.


Qualifications
Diploma from a recognized Chemical Technology Program Strong technical skills along with initiative and a desire to learn are all essential for this position.
Good mechanical abilities and lab skills are important along with strong written and oral communication skills.
Instrument electronic and computer hardware, software skills would also be of advantage.
